Ok, so the NFL lockout is finally over and the world is as it should be. Large, sweaty men blowing each other up really is a beautiful thing.

With that in mind, I was intrigued by the fact that testosterone-filled, muscle-bound athletes and frugal, business savvy millionaires worked out there differences in a civil fashion (although it took much longer than any of us wanted it to). I look at that through the lens of the church and see so many situations where people get bent out of shape and allow contentions to become WAY more than they ever should be. In other words, we make mountains out of mole hills.

This issue is addressed several times in the New Testament, but I think Paul summed it up best in Romans 12 when he said, “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” Here’s the deal: we aren’t going to get along with everyone all of the time. Just not gonna happen. However, when we do have differences we don’t have to act like immature goobers. One of the biggest knocks on Christianity from outsiders is the fact that their is so much disunity within the walls of our own camp. How sad.

I can’t imagine how God feels about that. As a dad (that is still learning!), I know that it frustrates me to no end when my kids don’t get along. So here’s my plea: let’s do everything in our power to be carriers and instruments of peace. Let’s make a difference in the perception of outsiders by responding appropriately to adversity. Let’s be like the NFL!!!
